Our team is checking images and video circulated this morning that show the aftermath of a alleged vehicle-borne explosive explosion that Russian officials state fatally injured a senior soldier in Moscow.
Officials in Russia confirmed that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was inside the car that detonated and that he succumbed of his wounds. A probe is currently ongoing.
The initial step to verify the site from which the images originated relied on posts saying the blast occurred on Yasenevaya Street in the southern part of the Russian capital.
Our analysis employed panoramic mapping services on Google Maps and the local mapping service Yandex Maps to corroborate the unique yellow colour of a nearby apartment building seen in the video.
Locating additional structures, streetlights and the road configuration confirmed the exact location the footage were taken.
We also checked that the videos were new and that the visuals had not undergone digital alteration.
