Weather experts are saying a chilly beginning to the new year, with wintry precipitation anticipated across much of the UK. Revelers are advised to wrap up as bitterly cold temperatures are expected for New Year's Eve.

Celebratory Celebrations Continue In Spite of Warnings

Edinburgh's famous Hogmanay events are expected to go ahead, unlike last year's calling-off. This is in spite of advisories for snow in northern Scotland.

"An icy New Year's Eve night for those out celebrating, so warmer clothes will be necessary," noted the Met Office.

Displays Under Open but Cold Skies

In other parts of the UK, the weather is expected to be ideal for fireworks displays, with no rain and good visibility. The mercury are due to be cold, making additional clothing a necessity, according to forecasters.

Further north, conditions will be more overcast, but this is not anticipated to hamper visibility for watching fireworks. "There is no expectation of low cloud, mist or murk, so you should be able to see fireworks, just not stars," commented one forecaster.

Extensive Advisories for Friday

Moving into Friday, advisories are active across Northern Ireland and extending from Wales, through the north-west, the West Midlands and reaching London and most of the south-east of England.

• The public are advised to leave additional time for trips on the road.
• Delays and cancellations are likely on the transport network.

Temperatures Expected to Fall Even More

As 2026 begins, it will be "chilly no matter where you are," said forecaster Simon Partridge. Temperatures are expected to fall even more as snow and gale-force winds are likely to batter the north of the country.

Around 10cm of snow could accumulate to have settled in some areas by Friday morning, reaching up to 30cm on the top roads and uplands.

Medical Advisories Activated

Meanwhile, amber cold health alerts have been issued for the north-east and north-west of England. These are expected to continue until noon on 5 January, with the mercury forecast to fall to between 3C and 5C.

The health agency stated this indicated the weather could to trigger notable consequences across medical and care provision. This involves a potential rise in the number of deaths among those with health conditions or those in the older age groups.
