Matteo Cancellieri Shows Brief Sparks of Brilliance in Silver Lining for Haywire Lazio

The atmosphere at their home stadium was anything but joyful this past Saturday. The home side was losing against Torino, an opponent that had allowed a total of 10 goals while netting just two in their last five league matches. Fans from the Curva Nord were concluding their ongoing dissent in a continuous dispute with chairman Claudio Lotito.

This Year's Efforts Falling Apart?

Had their campaign falling apart, or did there exist a binding element keeping it intact in the first place? The club brought back Maurizio Sarri as manager during the off-season, only for him admitted that the club had failed to disclose a registration embargo they were set to be hit with for financial irregularities. Reports that he might quit were without basis, but he did say that Lotito had "swindled" him.

The Roman club were just as chaotic on the pitch as off the field, defeating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but falling short in the rest of their initial five matches, featuring the derby della Capitale. Throughout this period, it has been hard to determine if they are improving or imploding.

Matteo's Unforeseen Presence

One individual continued to smile amid the chaos. Matteo Cancellieri was not even supposed to remain with Lazio this season. He spent the last one with Parma on loan and, early this summer, his parent club were pushing for him to remain there a while longer. The registration embargo led to a change of plans. Lazio could not afford to thin their squad lacking backup options.

He signed originally under Sarri's first spell, at that time a 20-year-old alumnus of Verona's academy. He made 20 Serie A appearances in Lazio colors in the 2022-23 season, all but one of those from the bench. The club's longtime sporting director, Igli Tare, who left at the end of that season, later stated Sarri of "informing all Cancellieri would be a star only to bench him consistently."

Uncovering His True Position

Perhaps the manager was continuing to attempt to work out the specific characteristics of Cancellieri's abilities. Labeled as a wide forward upon signing, Cancellieri instead found himself much of that season as an ineffective backup to Ciro Immobile at No 9. Across 63 games during spells with Empoli and Parma in the past two years, he netted seven goals. Shoehorn
