Eurovision Was Traditionally a Whimsical Delight – But It Has Evolved Into a Calculated Tool to Whitewash War.
An freshly coined acronym came to light a couple of months into the military campaign against Gaza. Known as WCNSF, it means “Child casualty without any family left”. This acronym is found only in Gaza, per insights from doctors like paediatricians. Normally, it is uncommon for doctors to attend to a minor who has seen the death of their complete family. But, there has been no semblance of normality concerning the devastating conflict in Gaza, where complete genealogies have been wiped out and the number of child amputees is greater than that of any other region in the world. Nothing ordinary about scores of doctors arriving back from a landscape of rubble with accounts of children being intentionally shot at.
A Hell on Earth In Spite Of a Reported Truce
Conditions in Gaza persist as a profound humanitarian disaster. Vital medicines and equipment are failing to reach those in need, and international watchdogs have stated that genocidal acts are ongoing. The Israeli government disputes these allegations, consistent with how it denies everything it is charged with. But while traumatised orphans are now enduring frigid conditions in temporary shelters, there is a little heartwarming news: apparently nothing is going to stop the international singing competition from continuing with its professed goal of “togetherness and artistic sharing.” Organizers will continue to extend a welcoming platform for Israel, although several European countries have now withdrawn in objection. And this, apparently, is what global togetherness manifests as.
The contest, notably banned Russia from competing in 2022 over the “unprecedented crisis in Ukraine”. However, the situation in Gaza appears to be completely different.
A Selective Vision
Overlook the circumstance that Israel was criticized for questionable voting tactics last year in what could be seen as an bid to politicise Eurovision. Forget the fact that a three-year-old girl was reportedly killed in Gaza just days ago. Pay no mind to the evidence that attacks by settlers and forced displacement in the West Bank have increased dramatically. Forget the fact that global media are still blocked from independent reporting in Gaza. This entire context, evidently, should be allowed to get in the way of Eurovision’s self-proclaimed spirit of unity.
The Show Goes On While Ignoring Unimaginable Suffering
Eurovision reaches its seventieth anniversary next year – almost double the current lifespan of someone in Gaza at present. The broadcast will air, but it will likely never recapture the camp joy it once represented. An institution that once promoted peace has now become a cynical way to sanitize military aggression.
