The original creators behind the well-known ice cream brand Ben and Jerry's has announced that corporate owner Unilever stopped the introduction for a new Palestine-themed frozen dessert product.

The entrepreneur, that established the business alongside his partner, revealed that he will independently develop the controversial flavor within an individual collection highlighting issues the company has been prevented from speaking out about.

Longstanding Conflict Involving Founders and Parent Company

The recent announcement intensifies the continuing conflict among the world-famous ice cream maker and Unilever, the British consumer goods giant which acquired the ice cream brand since 2000.

Both founders have claimed that Unilever along with its ice cream arm Magnum improperly prevented Ben & Jerry's from "maintaining its activist principles".

Watermelon Flavor becoming a Symbol for Support

Mr. Cohen stated through an Instagram video that he is creating an innovative watermelon-flavored sorbet, asking for public suggestions for the product's name and additional components.

“I'm accomplishing what they were prevented from doing,” the founder declared from his kitchen. “I'm making a watermelon-based frozen dessert that calls for permanent peace in Palestine while demanding addressing the harm that occurred in the region.”

This particular fruit has become a symbol for solidarity with the Palestinian people because of its colors, that match those of Palestine's national banner – red, green, black and white.

Historical Social Engagement plus Current Changes

Several years ago, the ice cream company refused to sell its products in areas occupied by Israel, leading to Unilever transferring the Israeli operation to an Israeli distributor, thus allowing continued sales in the occupied West Bank.

This upcoming dessert series will be developed under Mr. Cohen's personal brand, the socially conscious dessert company that originally created several years back for endorsing ex- US presidential candidate Bernie Sanders with the flavor "Bernie's Back".

Management Changes and Future Intentions

Mr. Cohen indicated how he will create additional ice cream flavors focusing on issues which the company was prevented from addressing publicly due to Unilever.

This development follows partner Jerry Greenfield stepped down his position at Ben & Jerry's recently, after many years with the organization, citing concerns that the company's autonomy had been undermined following corporate moves to curb their advocacy work.

Previously, Ben Cohen commented how “My partner has strong compassion and the ongoing dispute with Unilever was deeply distressing him."

“My conscience compels me to keep working inside the company to advocate for its independence so that the company can actualise its ethical purpose, the values which it was founded on and has maintained for decades," he told journalists.
